Adobe to sponsor OpenType development workshops in India
I am pleased to announce that this year Adobe is one of the sponsors of the Indian Institute of Technology’s Typography Day at its Industrial Design Centre in Mumbai. In connection with this event, I will be presenting on the typesetting capabilities for Indian scripts in Adobe InDesign. This will only be the beginning of my journey….
In order to benefit individuals active in the field of typeface design, I will also be hosting a series of one-day type development workshops in several Indian cities. These workshops will be targeted at helping to foster local type designers and engineers within India and will thus be limited to persons residing in the region.
This workshop has been designed to help typeface designers take their design and font development skills to the next level. Whether you are a novice who wants to turn letter drawings into type, or you have had some experience designing and developing fonts, I will present a range of topics that will help you to improve the technical quality of your font output. During this workshop series I will demonstrate general type design principles using FontLab Studio 5 and the Adobe Font Development Kit for OpenType (AFDKO), however these principles will also be applicable to other type design environments.
Class sizes will be kept to 10 participants per workshop so that I can give each attendee sufficient attention. The format will be a general summary of technical topics in the morning with time for hands-on learning in the afternoon. There will be no registration costs associated with the workshops. Attendees will benefit most if they are able to bring their own computer and type design work, however this is not a requirement. No additional supplies will be provided.
Following is a tentative schedule:
Date | City | Venue |
---|---|---|
5 March | Mumbai | Industrial Design Centre at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay |
7 March | Pune | Symbiosis Institute of Design |
9 March | Bengaluru | Adobe Campus |
10 March | Bengaluru | National Institute of Design R&D Campus, Bengaluru |
12 March | Delhi | Adobe Campus |

We will be updating this schedule on this page as plans become finalized. For more details, or if you are interested in registering for any of these workshops, please contact me directly. (Update 21 February 2012, Unfortunately the workshops are now full.)
I look forward to seeing you in India!

i look forward to seeing such events happening in pakistan as well, adobe needs to spend some money in that country as well
We welcome suggestions for hosting similar events in other regions, and we seriously consider them. Thank you. Whether we can host such events depends on several factors, the details of which are somewhat complex. Regardless, involvement from the local development community helps to bolster such events, because we not only want to teach them, but we also want to learn from them through their participation. This ensures that such events become genuine information-exchange opportunities.
