Creative Suite 4 (CS4) fonts

For folks doing an upgrade, the CS4 font list looks a lot like CS3, except for a few fonts removed, and a new registration incentive: the complete Sanvito Pro family (there will be a new landing page for this family, but it’s not up yet). Sanvito Pro is a versatile informal script face with four weights and four optical size variants for each weight, for a total of 16 fonts.

Typefaces you might have seen in CS3 that aren’t in CS4: Arno Pro, Bickham Script Pro, Garamond Premier Pro. Further typefaces bundled with InDesign CS3 but not InDesign CS4: Bernhard Modern Std, Caflisch Script Pro.

There are more East Asian fonts, notably:
– Adobe Kaiti Std and Adobe Fangsong Std, additional simplified Chinese fonts
– With InDesign and suites including InDesign, the “Pr6N” versions of the Kozuka Gothic and Kozuka Mincho typefaces. These fonts have the Adobe-Japan1-6 character set, and are JIS-2004 savvy.

All in all, still a LOT of fonts, just a slightly smaller set.

Here’s what is in the standard font installer used by most CS4 apps:

Wait, waaait. Are you saying that upgrading to CS4 is going to _remove_ fonts from my system? Fonts that I (well, my boss) paid for as part of CS3? Or am I misunderstanding? Because that sounds _absolutely crazy_.[I could have been more explicit. Upgrading will NOT remove any fonts. It’s just that there is some stuff that were bundled/instealled with CS3 (or a reg incentive), which are not with CS4. – T]

  2. Arpan says:

Could you give us any information about Hypatia Sans Italic?I got it with CS3, and was hoping that the italics would follow soon. You had mentioned that the Italics versions might be offered for a low price for those who already had the regular versions. It’s one of my favorite Sans Serif fonts, and having the italic versions would make them a whole lot more useful.[No question that italics will make the family much more versatile. Currently, my best take is “in the first part of next year” after I finish a bunch of public speaking and have a minor surgery. I know that’s not as fast as one might like (including me). I should also stress that is just an educated guess, and that we have not officially scheduled the release yet. – T]

  3. Michael says:

I’m very interested in Arno Pro. I know it is bundled with CS3 but can you tell me if it is with a new purchase of CS 3.3 too?[Yes, it is. But not with CS4. – T]

  4. Campy says:

Can you tell me when Robert Slimbach’s Gauge will be released? I was really hoping that it will be released with CS4, but I see that it’s not! In case you’re not familiar with this font, it’s the typeface used for the CS3 and CS4 icons. Thank you![I’m very familiar with the typeface in question. The current working name is “Adobe Clean.” But the bad news is that we’re saving it for Adobe’s exclusive use for the foreseeable future. Expect to see more of it in the future! – T]

WTF… where the hell is century gothic when i need it? just upgraded. Been doing the graphic design for my website with cs3 and century… now CS4 doesnt have it.. are you fuckin kiddin me?[Nothing to do with Adobe. We have *never* bundled Century Gothic with any of our software. It’s a Monotype typeface, also widely licensed by Microsoft, bundled with various Microsoft applications and possibly Windows itself. If you have it installed, it should appear in the font menus of Adobe applications- T]

  7. JWB says:

Are the fonts in CS3 or 4 dupilcated in the Font Folio 11?[All the fonts bundled with CS3 and CS4 are included in Font Folio 11. However, keep in mind that the upright fonts of the family Hypatia Sans Pro that were made available as a Registration Incentive for CS3, are not included in Font Folio 11. – M]Will they ever allow an upgrade from CS3 or 4 for that or lower for a single license?[I’m not sure what you’re asking. – M][“Adobe® Font Folio® 11 software includes more than 2,300 fonts from the Adobe Type Library in OpenType® format”] JWB

  8. Eric says:

We’re having major issues with work collaboration with our department — all of whom now are licensed CS4 users. Specifically with font discrepencies between each user. Some users upgraded from older suites (like CS2 or CS3), while others upgraded from the old Video Collection or Production Bundles. Mainly, the MyriadPro font is very problematic.First, depending on the “version” or file date of the font (i.e. MyriadPro-Regular.otf), the kerning table is different and wreaks havoc on our line breaks and layout when we edit each others files. The only solution has been to enforce ALL users to remove their versions and to install the most recent version from CS4. I’m not sure which suite changed the version but it is nightmare when files are opened at the last minute prior to print production and the layout is all messed up.Secondly, some employees seem to have MORE MyriadPro fonts installed (that came from older Adobe suites like the Production Bundle or Video Collection). So obviously they are using these fonts in documents and other employees don’t have them if they upgraded to CS4 from a different path.We all now use the CS4 Design and Master Collections and remnants of these extra fonts are still on some PCs. So I’m curious if there is any recommendation by Adobe to help a group like ours control consistency by offering the FULL set of MyriadPro fonts for licensed CS3/CS4 users? Specifically the BlackCond and LightCond is one that our client loves but not all of us have loaded.[The Myriad Pro Black Condensed and Light Condensed were bundled with InDesign CS2, but not since. Your best solution would be to purchase licenses for those fonts.I regret the version-control issues you’re running into. When we revise fonts we try to keep changes that might affect line lengths to an absolute minimum. And when we need to make more sweeping changes, we change the font’s name so the two versions can’t accidentally be swapped. You’ll see some fonts with name changes from us in 2010.- David L]

  9. Ginger says:

Can you tell me what the ratio of PostScript, TrueType and OpenType fonts are in the CS4 Suite? I am doing some research on the topic, am very curious what to expect from Adobe in this respect.[All the fonts that come with CS4 are OpenType fonts. That’s the only kind of font Adobe has made for more than nine years now.Of course there are exceptions to everything when it comes to fonts. Most CS4 products include PDF-generating capabilities, and the PDF code includes a few Type 1 (a.k.a. PostScript) fonts. And a few of the products use a TrueType version of Myriad in their UI because of limitations on Windows.- David L]

  10. Bevi says:

A LOT of duplicates were installed on my Vista system with CS4 and Framemaker.Example…MinionPro Bold duplicates are in these folders:C:windowsfontsC:program filesAdobeFrameMaker7.2fminitfontsC:program filesAdobeAcrobat 9.0Designer 8.2C:program filesAdobeAcrobat 9.0ResourceIf I use a font manager, can I remove 3 of the dupes, and leave the C:WindowsFonts version? Is there a list of which fonts are REQUIRED to run CS4 apps? And why was the same font installed into 2 different subfolders in Acrobat’s program files folder? Can I remove one?[Some fonts are bundled with applications as an enhancement, while others are bundled to support core functionality. In general, fonts installed in a program files directory are those the application expects to have available. Because different applications use different directories, there can be duplication. Unless you’re in danger of running out of disk space, it’s safest to leave these fonts installed. They won’t interfere with the other copies, as each of these “private” directories is used only by a specific application.Starting with Creative Suite 3, the CS products install fonts in the main fonts directory. This makes them available to all applications on your system, which we trust is a good thing. Of course it also blurs the distinction between “required” and “enhancement” fonts. We’re hopeful that future versions of the installation technology will enable more flexibility. -David L]

I am trying to cross reference my library/fonts folder to the list provided above to create a backup of the newly installed CS4 fonts. Many I am not finding. Am I looking in the wrong place? I don’t see them in the other font folders either (system/library/fonts, user/library/fonts, etc.)[Some of the fonts are not installed and you’ll have to look for them in the installation DVD – MS]

I used ITC Mona Lisa and Sabon last year before I upgraded to CS4 and it’s not available on my system now. Do you have any information on these 2 and what I can do?[You can license them from the Adobe Type Store – MS]

  13. I do a good bit of graphics work for my business website, as well as publications, brochures, etc. I use exclusively Adobe software on my Mac to accomplish these tasks. I recently upgraded to the CS5 version of Photoshop & Dreamweaver, and purchased the full-edition of InDesign. I noticed, however, that the range of fonts which came *with* Photoshop and InDesign CS5 was pretty “lean”, and in particular, void of certain fonts that I’d really like to use (e.g., Bernhard Modern Standard… all four variants). Do you know *where* I can obtain these and many more fonts to use with Adobe products? If I have to pay, so be it… but I’d really like to expand my font library. Thanks in advance for your assistance![You can find a broad selection of fonts for sale in our Type Showroom, including all four faces of Bernhard Modern Standard that you referenced. I think that you’ll also find that our prices are very reasonable.
