It would then stand to reason that either use in a data URI is allowed or use in a PDF shared on the Web is not allowed because that too would be “server” use.

I’d much rather you simply license fonts to use with @font-face and I’d be happy to pay for them. You really don’t get any real protection with Typekit since it’s trivially easy to grab the font out it since you’re basically just using @font-face and data URI.
