Details on this morning’s outage

Earlier today, EdgeCast, the content distribution network that we use to serve fonts, suffered a Distributed Denial of Service Attack. According to our monitoring systems, we experienced packet loss and slow font serving for approximately 90 minutes affecting users in the Western half of the US. We have received the following status report from our provider:

Today at approximately 8:24 AM Pacific Standard Time, Los Angeles and San Jose points of presence for EdgeCast Networks began experiencing service degradation for a portion of customers as well as ingest services connecting to Los Angeles.…By 9:55 AM, EdgeCast engineers were able to confirm that this attack had been completely blocked and was no longer affecting EdgeCast points of presence.

At this point, Typekit font serving is back to normal. We apologize for this issue and are monitoring our vendor’s network performance closely. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to leave a comment or contact us at support@typekit.com.

Wondered what was happening. Was ready to blame my hosting provider, then realized it was hanging up on Typekit.

Note that I am located in New York. So, it wasn’t isolated to just the Western half of US.

    Thanks!

I noticed slow responses from Typekit services/servers last night around 10PM PST as well. Was that related?
