Featured Site: The new New York Times Opinion Pages

This week, the New York Times’ relaunched their Opinion Pages. The new minimal layout distinguishes the Opinion Pages from the rest of the paper, while the flexible template showcases the accompanying illustrations. The entire look exudes the confidence and authority one has come to expect from the Times; and, more importantly, it does a great service to the excellent editorial content within.

The redesigned New York Times Opinion Pages

Perhaps our favorite part of the redesign is the classy new typography, courtesy of Typekit and the Times’ custom version of Cheltenham. We worked hard to ensure that this historic font would render beautifully and consistently across a wide range of browsers and devices. Gone are the days when a publication had to compromise on fonts for the web; with Typekit, the Times can look just as good online as they do in print.

Update: Cheltenham has also been rolled out on the New York Times Best Sellers list.

We’re working closely with the Times and other enterprise customers to deliver custom fonts to the web, and we will be sharing more examples from those partnerships soon. Stay tuned!

I think that this is a really nice redesign and a great font use.

Starting the work day out by reading the NYTimes Op-Ed page has been a habit of mine for a long time.
Nothing like cussin’ out William Safire to start the day. (I miss him a lot.) And – in the days of print only – Russell Baker could always put a smile on my face.
The redesign looks good, I like it.
Nice to see web fonts on a high-profile, high-volume site like NYTimes. Cheltenham never looked so good.
(Gotta go visit with Firefox and compare kerning. Kerning working?)

I actually stumbled across Typekit (and Cheltenham, thanks to whatthefont) specifically because I was digging around in the the NYT source html trying to figure out just how they were displaying that slick new font for the headers of their pages. Kudos do all involved.

Has anyone else reported problems with rendering of the headlines in Safari on Windows?

I’ve tried turning off all extensions, but it doesn’t help.
